3D Printed Pipboy 3000
For DragonCon this year, I created two cosplays. I stepped into the shoes of the Marvel Avenger Ant-Man, and also into the shoes of a Vault Dweller from Vault 11 in Fallout New Vegas. To go along with the vault dweller, I made a 3D printed Pipboy 3000!
The Model:
The pipboy was created by Dragonator, you can find all the information about it here on his Instructables page. I grabbed the stl files, a printed a few prototype pieces to test the fit. My arms are slightly larger than what the original was designed for, so I ended up scaling the models to 110%. This also gave me enough room to use my old touchscreen cell phone as the screen of the pipboy. I used ABS Slurry to glue the pieces together. After some rough sanding, a few coats of primer and a few more of top coat, the Pipboy was completed!
The App:
The cellphone was running an app created by Reddit user /u/pimp-boy. He took the assets from Fallout: New Vegas and created an android app that simulated the pipboy screens from the game. He even has the music in it and everything. In order to keep the cellphone charged while walking through the convention hall, I managed to cram a 10000mAh external battery underneath the phone. That kept everything charged, even while blasting the music non-stop.
Overall, the print was a success, and the costume was a success! There are a few modifications I would do to the project for the next go around, such as adding a dedicated computer such as a raspberry pi, but that will have to wait for another time.
